Artificial Intelligence: The Next Frontier

What will happen when the majority of jobs across the world are taken over by robots that can work much more efficiently than humans ever could? It seems like a very daunting prospect, but in fact, this will become a reality in the near future.

When imagining robots, most people think of big clunky pieces of metal that move around trying to attack other people. However, society’s narrow definition for robots is inaccurate. Simply speaking, robots are machines that are capable of undertaking a series of complex tasks. Now, when put into broader context, robots can be anything from software programs to social networking platforms that aim to become smarter and achieve its tasks with increasing accuracy and speed.

The major force that drives the development of such robots is Artificial Intelligence (AI) which is simply the ability for computers to complete tasks that would usually require human intelligence. AI is all about making computerized systems exhibit human intelligence.


Examples of AI in today’s society include:

  • Transportation apps such as Lyft and Uber. They use Machine Learning, a subset of AI to determine the wait time, price of your ride, etc.
  • Voice controlled systems such as Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa. These systems use AI to become smarter so that they can increase their voice recognition and understand requests that users make.
  • Social Networking platforms such as Facebook. These platforms use facial recognition software to detect the people in each photo, and over time, the neural networks in the platform become better at associating images with people, allowing them to better recognize the people in each photo.

Nevertheless, what we don’t immediately realize is that AI has the potential to unleash large-scale damage to human society. While AI is programmed to be beneficial, it has the potential to wreak havoc. I’m sure that you have all watched sci-fi movies where an incredibly smart professor builds a robot that will help him, but later in the movie, that same robot turns against him and develops its own agenda, being able to think for itself.

Many big names in tech, including Bill Gates, Steve Wozniak, and Elon Musk, have expressed valid concerns about the safety of AI. They argue that the software we create will eventually be able to completely do everything by themselves and end up not needing humans at all. Furthermore, many say that AI will eliminate the need for human involvement in the majority of jobs across the world. This will result in soaring rates of unemployment, leaving many in poverty.

Artificial Intelligence is a very controversial topic as it leads to both positive and negative repercussions in society. On one hand, AI makes our lives easier as our devices are continuously increasing their ability to help and serve us. And on a different perspective, advancements in Artificial Intelligence will lead to many of us losing our jobs to machines that can work smarter and better than us.
